I found the USB-RS232 converters are not reliable in general, even if they are cheaper. Whenever possible, always for a PCI or PCMCIA. They have little to try to lose the first street cheaper - cable adapter, and if it for you in order. If not, crude more expensive for adapter cards, but more reliable.
